8 ways to promote risk-taking at work
- Be a role model (whatever your position): Take risks & talk about them.
- Provide training on taking smart, calculated risks (even a short training can do wonders!).
- Include risk-taking as part of performance evaluations.
- Provide incentives ($$, time off) for trying smart, calculated risks.
- Don't punish employees if a risk turns out badly.
- Offer encouragement and practical advice to others considering a risk.
- Publicize & celebrate risk-taking efforts -- even ones with "negative" outcomes.
- Laugh at the risks that don't go well. You're still learning, growing & improving.
